Boating on the York River
Steve spent the weekend down at Yorktown, visiting his father. Fred lives on one of the creeks off the York, and Steve's stepcousin Paul keeps his boat at Fred's dock. Fred's boat, the Four Aces, washed up that draw in the background during the recent hurricane and had to be drug up through the woods (after they lifted the trees off of her) and put on a trailer to get back to the water. Steve said she has a bit of damage to the glass on the cabin, so next weekend they will take her up the James River for repairs.
Meanwhile, they went out for a spin on Paul's boat. Over at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, where Steve worked one summer, they were still picking up damaged buildings from the hurricane. Things looked pretty normal over at York River Yacht Haven, the yacht club where we spent so much time on our boat when we were finishing the exterior paint job. There's always a traditional boat or two out on the river on a nice weekend, too.

Halloween
We had the spookiest neighborhood in town. Down at the Swicks, they'd put their speakers out on the deck and were blasting scary music interspersed with screams and other panic-inducing noises. Oz made the scariest treats: finger cookies with nails made from almond slices stuck on with seeping red jam. And then when you came up the hill to our house, you had to walk in perfect dark towards the Terrible Glowing Eyes of Doom.
Tina wasn't sure about the whole idea. The costume thing just didn't fly: no jewelry, thank you, and certainly not the labrador look with the bandana, no. But once a few kids showed up, she was there at the door waiting for the next set. That part of Halloween, she liked.

A walk on a drying-out day
We'd had days, maybe weeks, of rain. Everything was soaked. So when there was a sunny break, even though it was pretty cool, Tina and I went dashing out for a walk across the bridge and out to Fish Creek. The sun was low, there was more fresh snow in the mountains, the tide was full, and steam was flying up off of everything the sunlight touched.

The ongoing project of getting ready for winter
It looked to me as though even the greenhouse season was drawing to an end. So I ripped out all the plants from the greenhouse and cleaned that all up (picking up the rotten tomatoes that fell between the tires and the foundation: yuck!). And I pushed three wheelbarrowloads of horse manure up the hill from Brin's paddock. I topped all the redneck raised beds with it, spread a row down along where the rhubarb are in what looks to be the middle of the lawn, and topped the new, rather mineral soil where we planted two of our Siberian larch. Don't worry about how those baby trees have dropped their needles: they're deciduous conifers and yes, are supposed to do that. But yeah, it does look scary.

Family photos
Steve wanted me to scan a few old photos for him to take on his trip. This is his mother, his family having breakfast in Japan, and his maternal grandmother.

First snow
Yesterday, Tina was most distressed to find that it was slushing out--a downpour of not quite snow but much firmer than rain. It collected on her back as she made a hasty dash into the yard, but she soon gave it up as a bad idea. By evening, it was thick but wet.
The next morning was clearly snowed-upon when the sky finally lightened. It's melted again, but remains at elevation. Will it last the season?

The end of the deck gardens and potting up indoors
It was pouring rain, so Tina and I took advantage of a light enthusiasm for gardening and cleared the lettuce boxes off the deck, brought the geraniums indoors, and settled things for the winter in the garage. While I was messing around, I decided to pot up some grievously-neglected house plants for a comfier winter.

Tina strolls down the old boardwalk
Tina and I love to walk along the old boardwalk. There's little traffic (read: dogs), there's water and gardens...something for everyone.
